Feryal Clark, nee Demirci, became the first woman born in Turkey to enter the U.K. parliament in the Dec. 12 general elections.
Feryal Clark replaced former Labour MP Joan Ryan as the MP for Enfield North which has a large Turkish and Kurdish immigrant population. Clark secured 23,340 votes and 51.8% of the vote share.
Clark was born in Turkey to Alevi Kurdish parents and was the first Kurdish MP in the UK Parliament. She studied bioinformatics at Exeter University and worked in diagnostic biochemistry and virology at University College Hospital and Barts.
She was elected as a Hackney councilor for Hoxton East and Shoreditch in 2006, where she has been a cabinet member for Neighbourhoods, and for Health, Social Care, Leisure and Parks, as well as holding the post of Deputy Mayor.
