Man fined £400 for dumping waste in the borough
Enfield Council has hailed its success in capturing a fly-tipper caught on CCTV dumping a mattress last month.
The man in question has been issued a £400 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) for dumping waste in the borough.
The council said he was fined after enforcement officers worked to find the man with the mattress who was caught on CCTV last month, including going door-to-door to make enquiries and using social media to help identify him.
A council statement said: “Their hard work has paid off with the individual in question now no doubt ruing his decision to dump a mattress in front of a CCTV camera in Palmers Road, N11, close to the junction with Bowes Road. “
Enfield Council said it has issued £17,440 in fines since the beginning of 2017, with 170 people being fined between £80 and £400 for fly-tipping and dumping domestic waste iaround the borough.
“All in all, Enfield Council’s hard-working enforcement team has issued 926 FPNs in the 2016/17 period, more than a five-fold increase on the previous year,” the council said.
“In addition, the number of fly-tip investigations has almost doubled (up 95 per cent) in the same period.”
Enfield had released a grainy CCTV image earlier in the year of a man carrying a mattress.
“The unmasking of the Phantom Fly-Tipper, and our supporting data, demonstrate that Enfield Council is proactive when it comes to investigating, chasing and punishing fly tippers,” said Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Daniel Anderson.
“We will not tolerate anyone who seeks to tarnish the image of our beautiful borough. The message is clear – if you fly tip, expect to be caught. We are on your case. When it comes to litter enforcement, we are one of the most determined boroughs in London spending around £4.4m each year keeping our streets clean.”
Enfield Council has a fly-tipping patrol squad, operating 20 hours a week. They patrol hot spot areas where fly-tipping has become prevalent and, where possible, issue on the spot FPNs.
Residents can also do their bit by reporting fly-tipping directly through the Council’s website, the council said.
